Technical platform

Client

The client is available for Mac OS X and Windows.

Mac

Minimum: Intel 1.5 Ghz and at least 1 GB RAM. The application will use about 60 MB hard drive space. For image editing, we recommend 2 GB RAM, Mac OS 10.4 or later and Java 1.5 or later. Recommended: To work effectively with Mac OS X, we recommend Intel Core duo, 1.6 Ghz or faster, 2 GB RAM.

Windows

Minimum: Pentium III, 1 MGhz with at least 1 GB RAM. The application will use about 60 MB hard drive space. For image editing, we recommend 2 GB RAM, Windows XP, 2003 or Vista. Java 1.5 or later. Recommended: Intel Pentium 4, Core duo or the equivalent. 1.6 Ghz or faster, 2 GB RAM.

Database Manager

Oracle 10i or MySQL. Can be run on all platforms that are supported by the database manager. Among the most common are Windows, Linux, OS X and Sun. The hardware requirements depend on the number of users, the type of material that is to be managed and on archival management.

Application Server

A standard application server which supports J2EE can be used. We recommend the application server JBoss that can be run on Windows, Linux, OS X and Solaris, to mention a few. In many cases, the application server can be installed on the same hardware as the database manager. We are happy to discuss different solutions with you.

Stand-By Server

We recommend that you set up a stand-by server which is continually updated by the main server. In case of a computer break down, all operations are transferred to the stand-by server. The stand-by server should be similar to the main server. Newspilot comes with a number of different backup and security solutions. We are happy to discuss these solutions with you.

The Service Articlepreview

Supports layout-driven production. On the Mac, this service requires at least a G5 2 Ghz, 1 GB RAM. On a PC running Windows, this service requires at least a P4, 2 Ghz, 1 GB RAM. The service also requires the installation of QuarkXPress version 6.5 or, alternatively, InDesign CS 2. The customer is responsible for obtaining such a license. For large installations, several servers may be needed.

Other Services

Normally, several of the service functions below can be run on the same machine. Most often, two machines are needed for all the services below (please note the separate comment regarding file-based backup).

The Service Image Processing Distiller

Image support in Newspilot. Mac with OS X, recommended: Intel core duo, 2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM. Alternatively, a PC with Windows XP, not 2003. P4, 2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM. A faster machine will process images more quickly. For large installations, several servers may be required.

The Service Automatic Image Processing

Image processing support in Newspilot. Mac with OS X or PC with Windows (not 2003 server), recommended: Intel core duo, 2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM. Software and hardware for the image processing engine that is to be used is also required. Binuscan exists for Mac OS X and Windows. There is also Colorfactory for Windows.

The Service Import

Import of news wires, articles, images. Mac with OS X or PC with Windows (not 2003 server), recommended: Intel core duo, 2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM.

The Service File-Based Backup

Emergency backup. Mac with OS X or PC with Windows (not 2003 server), recommended: Intel core duo, 2 Ghz, 2 GB RAM. Storage space for the files is also needed. We recommend that file- based backup be installed on a separate machine that also serves as an emergency file server.

Archive

Newspilot can communicate or be integrated with most archival systems on the market, in particular XLibris® from Infomaker. The type of hardware needed depends on the archival solution you want. We are happy to discuss different solutions with you.
